Rep. Tulsi Gabbard Joins LULAC in Saluting Latino Military Heroes

Oldest and largest U.S. Hispanic advocacy organization partners with Denny’s and T-Mobile in honoring brave service of Latino veterans

MILWAUKEE (July 11, 2019) – Today, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) convened its membership to honor the brave Latino men and women who have served our country and defended our freedoms. Latinos have had valuable and often untold roles in U.S. history. As studies have shown, almost 17 percent of new military recruits are Latino and their participation in military service dates as far back as the American Revolutionary War.

“LULAC was established largely by Hispanic veterans of World War I who sought to end ethnic discrimination against Latinos in the United States,” said Congresswoman and 2020 Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI). “We must remember their service and sacrifice and honor their great work and legacy by continuing this mission. As President, I will continue to call out and stand against bigotry and discrimination in all its ugly forms. I will bring the values of service above self, that are at the heart of every service member, to the presidency, ensuring our White House is a beacon of light representing inclusion, equality, opportunity and respect for all.”

“Latino veterans make this nation proud everyday as they raise their families, start businesses and advocate for American civil rights,” said Chairman for the LULAC Veterans Affairs Committee Roman Palomares. “LULAC stands shoulder to shoulder with these heroes, including those who have been rejected by the country they serve because of their origin or immigration status. No one who has served in the armed forces should ever need to face detention or family separation.”

Today’s Defenders of Freedom Breakfast featured American GI Forum Commander Lawrence Romo; USMC Captain Ret. Queta Rodriguez; and Congresswoman and 2020 Presidential Candidate Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI). This is one of the many events LULAC will be hosting over the week to display its commitment to bring deported veterans home and helping make sure that those veterans who served our country receive the care and services they were promised.

On Wednesday, July 10, LULAC hosted a Veterans Symposium and Veterans Claims Clinic to provide information on programs, benefits and services offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs to Veterans and their families. Today at 10:30am CT, LULAC will also host its Federal Employment Process for Veterans and Transitioning Military workshop for service members and spouses.

Led by LULAC President Domingo Garcia and CEO Sindy Benavides, LULAC’s four-day convention will bring together over 20,000 Latino leaders from across the country for seminars and notable events, including a Presidential Town Hall with 2020 candidates: Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT); Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA); former U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro; and former Representative Beto O’Rourke (D-TX). LULAC will host events on its National Stage featuring Second Lady of the United States Dr. Jill Biden (2009 – 2017); Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO); U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI).
