LULAC Remembers A Brave Friend Of Justice

Nation’s Oldest & Largest Civil Rights Organization Pays Tribute to U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings

Washington, DC - Sindy Benavides, National Chief Executive Officer of The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today issued the following statement on the passing of Rep. Elijah E. Cummings (D) Maryland:

“LULAC today speaks loudly and proudly of our many years having worked alongside one of our nation’s greatest champions of civil rights, social justice and the advancement of gender equality in America.

His fearlessness on behalf of those most vulnerable in our nation and the unmistakable clarity of his voice for the oppressed were born out of his own resilient life experience. Representative Cummings was born the son of a sharecropper and rose to become a member of the Maryland House of Delegates and later, the U.S. Congress. In all, for more than 36 years, he was a faithful and devoted public servant whose hallmarks were integrity and distinction.

Through his life’s work he inspired unwavering tenacity in the struggle for civil rights even in the face of seemingly insurmountable forces and empowered movements to be steadfast while urging others to rise up and lead within their own communities. Nothing was more important to our dear friend than liberty and freedom for all as guaranteed under our Constitution which is why LULAC rated him at the highest level in recognition of his commitment to our shared vision.

We will miss our departed Amigo and Hermano, shall cherish all the wisdom he imparted as we endeavor to reflect his fierce love for righteousness in our continued march towards a brighter day in America when all men, women and children can enjoy the full meaning of life, liberty and justice for all.”
